What’s new for our 2019-2020 season? Aside from new players and new coaching staff, more data analytics!
Beginning this season, we will have a separate category of 8 hustle stats: “These are the intangibles that don’t show up in the traditional box scores. Diving for loose balls, getting a hand in passing lanes for a deflection, being close enough to contest a shot, or sacrificing the body and taking a charge, etc, etc, etc”
8 Hustle Stats
- (NEW) 2-PT FG Contested – how many times did a player contest a 2-PT field goal? Doing so reduces the chance of the other team from scoring.
- (NEW) 3-PT FG Contested – how many times did a player contest a 3-PT field goal? Doing so reduces the chance of the other team from scoring.
- (NEW) Loose-Ball Recovered – how many times did a player recover a loose ball? Recovering a loose ball increases the probability of possession.
- (NEW) Deflections – how many times did a player deflect the ball away from the other team, whether this results in a turnover or the opposing team retaining possession?
- (NEW) Screen Assist – a screen that directly leads to a basket by the player who received the screen. This is the only hustle stat that is in the offensive category.
- (NO CHANGE) Deflections to Out of Bounds stat.
- (NO CHANGE) Take Charge stat.
- (NO CHANGE) Forced Jump Ball stat.
Other New Stats
- (NEW) PTS off REBs – how many points did a team make coming off a rebound? Shows the value of getting offensive rebounds.
- (NEW) Starter/Bench Ratio- what is the ratio of stats by the starting 5 compared to the rest of the team? PTS REB AST BLK STL +/- EFFICIENCY.
- (NEW) NUM of Times Combo 5 Used In a Game – how many times was a 5-player combination used/subbed WITHIN A GAME? For example, the combo played in 1Q, 3Q, and twice in 4Q. Total=4.
- (NO CHANGE) ‘In How Many Games Did a 5-Player Combo Play’ stat.
